My journey as the founder of a management institute has been nothing short of an adventure — filled with creativity, learning, challenges, and the immense support of students, faculty, and recruiters.
In this journey, I’ve discovered a hard truth: the reality of the construction industry is far more grounded, complex, and full of potential than the romanticized or disheartening versions many students believe.
The Eye-Opening Conversation
When I first considered Real Estate Management, I had the privilege of speaking with a senior advisor from CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat).
That conversation opened my eyes to Construction Management — not just as a course but as a career path with immense, often overlooked potential.
The Decline in Civil Engineering Admissions in India
Despite the immense potential, civil engineering admissions are rapidly declining in India. Here’s the data that tells the story:
- Maharashtra:
Civil engineering faced a staggering 42% vacancy rate.
Mechanical and electrical branches followed closely with 39% and 35% vacancies respectively.
Meanwhile, computer science and AI had far fewer unfilled seats — less than 30%. - Karnataka:
Visvesvaraya Technological University eliminated 2,670 seats in civil and mechanical streams, converting them to newer tech fields like AI, ML, and Data Science. - Telangana:
In just five years, civil engineering admissions under the EAMCET convener quota plunged from 74.4% in 2017-18 to just 37.9% in 2021-22.
Why the Decline?
- Tech Temptation:
Students are lured by the salaries and glamor of IT, AI, and data science roles.
Even with declining IT hiring, students still see tech as the only way up. - Misaligned Curriculum:
Traditional engineering education hasn’t kept pace with industry evolution.
Students feel unprepared and unexcited. - Skewed Perceptions:
There’s a common notion that civil engineers end up working for uneducated site contractors — a belief that crushes ambition early on.
But Here’s the Reality — and the Opportunity
Civil engineers and construction professionals are not just site supervisors.
They are:
- Builders of cities
- Designers of skylines
- Managers of billion-dollar infrastructure projects
Examples include:
- Dubai’s Burj Khalifa
- India’s bullet trains and metro networks
- Smart cities
- Underwater transport systems
With massive redevelopment efforts needed globally — from post-war Ukraine to restructuring Britain’s aging infrastructure — civil engineers will be at the center of it all.
So why are we letting students walk away from this future?
IIBHM: The Gateway of Opportunities in Construction Management
At the International Institute of BuildTech & Healthcare Management (IIBHM), we’ve taken this challenge head-on.
Our Mission Is Simple Yet Bold:
- To re-ignite the passion for civil and mechanical engineering
- To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world construction
- To offer globally-relevant construction management programs
- To connect students directly with recruiters in India, the Gulf, and beyond
Through IIBHM, We Provide:
🎓 Industry-focused training in project management, real estate law, AI in construction, cost estimation, and more
🤝 Mentorship from leaders in construction and infrastructure
🌍 Placement support with opportunities in the Gulf, Europe, and Asia
🏗️ Exposure to real-world megastructures and innovations in smart construction
This is not just education.
It’s a career acceleration ecosystem.
A Call to Mentors and Industry Leaders — Are You Listening?
If you are a director, a veteran engineer, a project manager, or a recruiter — this is your moment to shape the future.
Let’s not just observe the decline in civil engineering interest.
Let’s:
- Speak to students
- Mentor them
- Share our journeys
- Show them the powerful, world-shaping work we do every day
And let’s guide them toward platforms like IIBHM, where they’ll find:
- Hope
- Structure
- And a future that is not just secure, but impactful
Final Word to Students
Wherever there is destruction, there is development.
Wherever there is soil, there will be civil engineers.
Your work will stand for generations.
The world needs you — and we at IIBHM are here to prepare you for that world.
Join us. Let’s build futures — not just buildings.
